My Thoughts On A Legendary Arnold Showpiece
Here are my thoughts on what went down after a memorable weekend watching the livestream.
General Thoughts
I’ve always loved watching the Arnold Classic competitions. I’ve been fascinated with Arnold Schwarzenegger from a young age. Besides his incredible physique, I love everything he stands for and the work he’s done to improve the industry.
With a huge increase in prize money and world record attempts, the Arnold received global attention after a memorable Olympia.
The Arnold always performs when it comes to production value. It’s gone from a single event to a huge sporting spectacle, showcasing physical prowess from all walks of life. Whatever you’re into, the Arnold Sports Festival has something to offer you.
As I mentioned above, Arnold Schwarzenegger has done incredible things to promote the sport of bodybuilding. What better way to grow the sport than a free live stream and detailed schedule. This is something that other competitions could certainly learn from.
As I watched the livestream, it was clear to see just how popular the Arnold has become. Every event featured packed crowds, with everyone screaming loudly for their favorite competitors. If this isn’t a good measure of success, I don’t know what is.
With the weekend drawing to a close, I can’t hide my disappointment that it’s over. While I’m grateful to have witnessed another legendary showpiece, I’ll be counting down the days till the next.
Men’s Open
The men’s open is a division I’ve been looking forward to seeing ever since the shocking results of the 2024 Mr. Olympia. The Arnold brought gave us the Mr. Olympia champion, a precious champion, and several other high-level athletes fighting for the title.
In a shocking turn of events, Derek Lunsford sensationally claimed the title. In doing so, he beat the 2024 Mr. Olympia champion, Samson Dauda. This leaves the door wide open for the 2025 Mr. Olympia later in the year.
Derek’s win represents a huge turn in form after his disappointing third place at the Olympia. With a new coach and late competition entry, it’s arguably the biggest shock of the 2025 season.
The open division could have gone to any of the top three. Samson has the sheer mass and stage presence to command any stage. Derek is a much smaller athlete but arguably has better lines and incredible leg development.
Derek’s Arnold win means that the open division is now wide open. He showed clear improvements from his Olympia showing, especially better leg conditioning. This is something that was identified following his Olympia loss.
As we look forward to the 2025 Mr. Olympia, Derek’s win leaves us with so many questions. I’m sure we’ll look to answer these over the next several months. With a new coach and the Arnold title, Derek is surely now one of the firm favorites for the Olympia.
Men’s Classic
It’s no secret that the retirement of Chris Bumstead left a huge hole in the classic division. He only competed at the Arnold once. However, his six Mr. Olympia titles firmly established him firmly as the best classic athlete in modern times.
In his last Olympia win before announcing his retirement, Chris beat Mike Sommerfeld, who came in second place. This put Mike as the firm favorite to take up the classic mantle.
The 2025 Arnold Classic provided the perfect stage for Mike to show his class. Many see it as on par with the Olympia, making it a key event in the bodybuilding calendar.
Mike’s win at the Arnold backed up what everyone’s long been thinking. While his physique may divide opinions, his recent showing confirms him as the future classic star.
In a high-quality line-up, Mike was arguably pushed much more than many thought he would be. The surprise package of this year was Logan Franklin. His second-place finish represented a huge jump after placing outside the top ten last year.
On stage, Sommerfeld looked nothing short of incredible. He doesn’t have the typical classical lines that everyone is looking for. However, his world-class muscle maturity and sheer size made him stand out above the crowd.
While there’s still a lot of competition before the Olympia, his Arnold win makes him one of the firm favorites to take the title.
Women’s Divisions
As the sport of bodybuilding grows, the women’s divisions have slowly increased in popularity. Women’s wellness is arguably one of the most popular, with athletes coming from all over the world to showcase their incredible physiques.
Before the event, Isabelle Nunes was expected to take the title. By taking the 2024 Olympia wellness crown, she de-throned Francielle Mattos, someone who’s long been regarded as the face of the division.
However, the 2025 Arnold certainly threw up some surprises. In an incredible showing, Eduarda Bezerra sensationally took the title, putting Nunes into second.
On stage, Nunes bought one of her better packages. However, compared to the Olympia, her midsection seemed off, ruining the overall flow of her physique.
This opened the door for a new champion to come forward. With Eduardo Bezerra taking the crown, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions as we look forward to the Olympia. With champions changing, who knows who’ll be the favorite to win the wellness title.
Conclusion
As another memorable event ends, attention shifts to the rest of 2025. The winners from each division will look to build on the momentum gained from their recent success. With around eight months until the 2025 Mr. Olympia, we’ll be providing updates throughout the competitive season.
Derek’s win will undoubtedly send shockwaves through the bodybuilding world. By beating Samson, he’s shown that he still has what it takes to be a champion. As we move on through the season, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on his progress and his future plans.
With another remarkable Arnold Classic drawing to a close, we’ll continue to digest these incredible results for quite some time. Stay tuned for some follow-up stories on some of this weekend’s winners!
