Did The 2025 Arnold Classic Strongman Live Up To The Hype?
Leading up to the event, excitement grew surrounding the return of Hafthor Bjornsson and his world record attempt. Many wondered if he would be able to build on fourth place last year after taking so long off. However, his accident in training represented a minor setback just weeks before the competition.
Leading up to the men’s event, two women broke the elephant bar deadlift world record. Andrea Thompson set a new world record before Lucy Underdown came straight back and broke it again. With this, the women’s record now starts at an impressive 676 pounds.
Hafthor was the only man in the field who managed to pull over 1000 pounds (1026 pounds). Following this, anticipation grew as the crowd prepared for his world record attempt. Well-known World’s Strongest Man competitor Jerry Pritchett looked on in admiration.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hafthor fail a deadlift.”

However, 1101 pounds proved a step too far for the Icelandic strongman. He managed to get some slight bar movement but was arguably quite far off from completing the lift. With this, the wait goes on for someone to break the record and take home USD 101,000 in prize money.
Day One
On the first day of events, the surprise package was rookie Lucas Hatton. After winning The Overhead Gauntlet and coming second in The Timber Carry, he sat in second place.
However, true to form, last year’s champion, Mitchell Hooper, sat at the top of the standings. Taking The Timber Carry and placing in the top three in the other two day-one events put him five points ahead. Hafthor Björnsson followed closely behind, just one point off second.
Day Two
On a memorable day two, rookie Lucas Hatton continued his incredible showing, starting the day by winning The Big Jerk. He’s been this year’s surprise package, with many unaware of who he was before the competition. After this weekend, it’s safe to say that his name will be remembered.
Hafthor Bjonsson then won The Timber Text to take his second event win. With this, it was down to the Atlas Stones To Shoulder event to see who would take the title.
Throughout both days, Mitchell Hooper had not been out of the top three placings. He only won one event, but his consistent performances are what got him the title.
Mitchell Hooper’s win puts him alongside Hafthor Bjornsson and Zydrunas Savickas as a three-time Arnold champion. It’s his third Arnold win in a row, reaffirming his place as the current man to beat. With this, he’ll look to continue his momentum at the World’s Strongest Man in just over two months!
My Overall Thoughts
Yet again, the Arnold Strongmen and Strongwomen put on an incredible show. We had multiple world records broken, surprising results, and incredible feats of strength showcased over a memorable two days.
With the event finished, I’ll be sure to keep an eye on the rise of Lucas Hatton. I was also unsure of who he was before the competition, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching him. I also really enjoyed seeing Hafthor Bjornsson in the mix for the title again. Hopefully, he can build on his third-place showing and compete for the World’s Strongest Man title.
However, full credit has to go to Mitchell Hooper. His consistent performances over the different events have made him a hard man to rival. His third win in a row means he’s surely the man to beat at the next competition.
Just like bodybuilding, the Arnold firmly exceeded expectations in the strongman. The production value was amazing, with several well-organized events running smoothly throughout both days. The ability of the Arnold to engage the crowd is something that sets it apart from any other sports event.
While strongman competitions don’t tend to be in the mainstream sports schedule, the Arnold is putting them on the map. As it continues to grow, we can’t wait to see what’s next for the strongest people on the planet.
Conclusion
With the 2025 Arnold Classic Strongman done and dusted, we can set back and reflect on an amazing event. We had new winners, a world record, and many amazing memories to cherish.
After all these years, the physical feats accomplished by men and women around the world continue to amaze us. I, for one, enjoyed every single second of this year’s event. As we look forward to the 2025 calendar, this one will surely be hard to beat.
