6 years ago I rode to Duluth in 2 days. I knew that now I could make the ride in a single day. This time I rode through Duluth and along the north shore of Lake Superior, extending my distance and experience.
Note: I forgot to restart my Garmin and caught the mistake about 10k later. My on bike computer captured the lost mileage and time, so I added those in.

I was skeptical that I would get much value from the added features of my Garmin 1000 package, but I'm glad I bought the top end and full package. That heart monitor really helps me to understand how hard I'm working out on these weekday sessions. A short ride of just 100 minutes, but 70% in zone 4, 15% in zone 5.

Rode 20km to where some interesting hills begin. Typical grades of 4%-7% and one hit 11%. I'm getting better a climbing, but as I get over 100 km during a long ride, climbing is the first aspect that becomes draining.
When I got back toward home, I was too close to 100km that I just padded the workout. Crazy - I'm seeing a 100k ride as a workout instead of a weekend tour.

At Harris, the northern tip of my route, I stopped at a cafe where I happened to find members of the 2017 ACA tour that runs from the Pacific to the Atlantic. On this self-supported tour each member's bike carries loaded panniers that carry camping gear and all essentials for a three month ride. I knew this tour crossed at this point, and I just happened to be at the right place on the right day at the right hour. The team had just passed the half-way mark on their 88-day tour covering 4200+miles (~6900 km).

When I arrived at Harris, I decided to eat at a small local cafe. Outside was a bike with loaded panniers and "Adventure Cycling" signage. (I took a week long bike-packing class with Adventure Cylcing last month). I spotted the cyclist and mentioned "Adventure Cycling." She invited me to eat at her table. Turns out [a] she works for Adventure Cycling developing the US/Canada bike maps, and [b] she is in the middle of her 3-month trip of traveling along the U.S. northern tier from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Wow. Tomorrow she will be connecting with the guy who was the leader on my bike-packing tour last month. We had a good conversation.

After a slow start, I started riding harder. ended up with over an hour in zone 4 and 22 minutes in zone 5. I've come to believe that pushing myself on short weekday workouts makes the long weekend tours more enjoyable.

My recent experience with Continental tires is that the rear does not last 2000 miles (~3000km). The new tire I bought in March wore down so that a piece of rubber tore off exposing the underlayer. But I never had a flat with these Gatorskins, so four months later I decided to buy another Gatorskin - despite its shorter-than-espected life. (Buy tires more often, but less time lost changing flats & patching tubes.)

A winning formula:
[a] plan some routes and load them on my Garmin
[b] get up and leave early, drive 40+ miles, park my car, and start touring new roadsNote: I failed to restart my Garmin after a break and it failed to record about 4.5 miles before I caught the error. Map shows a straight line over that gap (Harris to Stark). Actual ride was 104.98 miles (Garmin reported 100.36)

After a night of heavy rains and thunderstorms, we shared our last group breakfast, reviewed the day's route, and headed back to our starting point. Having completed the 6-day class/tour, we packed our gear into our cars, headed to a chosen restaurant for one last group-meal, and then each departed to home.
